Ancient Dragon

古龍 - Koryu

The Story of the Ancient Dragon Pattern

The dragon is a mythical creature known for its ability to transform its form, long celebrated as a powerful and auspicious motif. Over time, its appearance has evolved, giving rise to many interpretations—from serpent-like forms to more complex figures with scales, claws, and horns.

In this design, the dragon is depicted with a long, flowing body and four limbs, reflecting an early and more primal expression of the creature. Such forms are often referred to as ancient dragons (koryū), representing a stage before the dragon reached its fully realized, celestial image.

As a symbol, the dragon embodies growth, transformation, and hidden potential. It is often associated with a journey of development—beginning in a modest, grounded state and gradually rising toward strength and greatness.

The dragon portrayed in this pattern appears in that early stage of becoming—still gathering its power, not yet ascending to the heavens. This imagery carries a quiet but profound meaning: a reflection of growth over time. Just as the dragon evolves into a majestic being, this design can be seen as a symbol of personal progress, resilience, and the unfolding of one’s true potential.
