Until the Manyo period, "flowers" meant "plum blossoms," but by the Heian period, cherry blossoms were beloved by aristocrats, and "flowers" came to mean "cherry blossoms." Cherry blossoms have captivated people's hearts from the Heian period to the present day.
In ancient times, trees with drooping branches were believed to house divine spirits. In some regions, weeping cherry trees were not considered appropriate for planting near ordinary private homes and were instead planted within temple grounds.
