Puppies with Temari
犬と手鞠 - Inu to Temari
The Story of the Puppies & Temari Pattern
Dogs have long been cherished as symbols of safe childbirth and healthy growth. Even today, the tradition of praying for a safe delivery on the Day of the Dog (Inu no Hi) continues, reflecting this enduring belief. Known for giving birth easily and raising strong, healthy offspring, dogs naturally came to represent protection, fertility, and the prosperity of future generations.
Because of these meanings, dog motifs were often used in women’s kimonos, carrying wishes for safe childbirth, as well as in children’s garments, where their playful and gentle appearance added a sense of warmth and charm.
In this pattern, a small dog is shown playfully interacting with a temari, a traditional embroidered ball. The round form of the ball symbolizes completeness and harmony, while also representing good fortune and continuity. Together, the lively movement of the dog and the soft, balanced form of the ball create a composition full of life and gentle energy.
The dog in this design is depicted with a soft, endearing expression, reminiscent of beloved companion animals. Its playful nature brings a sense of joy, while still carrying deeper wishes for protection, strength, and a bright future.
The result is more than a pattern — it is a heartfelt expression of care, happiness, and the enduring wish for a safe and flourishing life.
