The Story of the Shippo Pattern
A pattern formed by dividing a circle into four equal parts using intersecting arcs is known as the Shippo pattern. When this motif is repeated seamlessly in all directions, it becomes the Shippo-tsunagi pattern. Because it expands endlessly outward, it has long been regarded as an auspicious design symbolizing harmony, the prosperity of descendants, and eternal longevity. It is also said that the name “shippo” reflects the idea of something spreading infinitely in all directions.
This design further develops the traditional pattern by incorporating smaller motifs within each circular form, blending multiple well-known elements of Japanese design into a unified composition.
Among these motifs is the Seigaiha pattern, a series of layered waves that evoke the image of the vast ocean stretching endlessly into the horizon. It expresses a wish for peace, continuity, and boundless good fortune.
Another element is the Kikkō pattern, based on the hexagonal shape of a turtle’s shell. Often arranged in a repeating Kikkō-tsunagi design, it symbolizes longevity and resilience. Within these hexagonal forms, auspicious motifs such as hanabishi (diamond-shaped floral patterns), chrysanthemums, and cranes are depicted—each representing prosperity, longevity, and good fortune.
Together, these layered patterns create a richly symbolic design, combining tradition with a sense of continuity and enduring blessings.
