The Story of the Earthly Branches Pattern
This pattern, depicting the twelve animals of the Earthly Branches (Jūnishi), is a reproduction of a design originally used for an obi (sash). All twelve animals are included—see if you can find your own zodiac sign within the design.
The illustrations have a distinct style that differs from typical Japanese motifs, suggesting influence from continental designs. This gives the pattern a unique character and historical depth.
In the past, people expressed their sense of fashion in creative and subtle ways. For example, one of the twelve animals might intentionally be omitted from the design. When wearing the obi, the missing animal could be represented by an obi clasp, completing the full set. In other cases, the wearer themselves—if born under the missing sign—would symbolically complete the composition. Such thoughtful coordination reflects a refined and playful aesthetic sensibility.
In addition to the twelve animals, the design also features the kirin, a mythical creature known as a benevolent and auspicious beast. The Kirin is said to appear as a sign of wise rule and a peaceful era, symbolizing harmony and prosperity.
Together, the complete set of the Earthly Branches and the presence of the kirin create a richly symbolic pattern—one that celebrates balance, good fortune, and tranquility in the world.
