Bamboo and Chrysanthemums

The Story of the Bamboo and Chrysanthemum Pattern
Bamboo has long been an essential element of Japanese New Year decorations, particularly kadomatsu. Evergreen and full of vitality, bamboo retains its fresh green color throughout the year, symbolizing resilience and life force. Since ancient times, it has been regarded as a sacred plant, used in Shinto rituals and divination as a vessel through which divine spirits descend.
Its spiritual significance appears across Japanese culture and folklore. In The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter, Princess Kaguya descends to the human world within a stalk of bamboo, while in The Tongue-Cut Sparrow, divine presence is associated with the bamboo grove. Bamboo is also used in ceremonies such as groundbreaking rituals and Tanabata, where it serves as a medium for communicating with the gods.
Growing swiftly and straight toward the sky, bamboo embodies integrity, purity, longevity, and the prosperity of future generations. Its upright form has long been admired in Japan, reflected in expressions that praise a “straightforward character.” Bamboo is also considered auspicious due to its phonetic association with celebratory words such as iwai (celebration).
It is often paired with other symbolic motifs, most famously in the combination of “pine, bamboo, and plum” (shōchikubai), a traditional grouping that represents good fortune and resilience. While bamboo has been appreciated since at least the Heian period, it became especially widespread among the general public during the Edo period, when such auspicious motifs gained popularity.
This design presents a modern interpretation of bamboo, depicting tall, upright stalks in silhouette, complemented by chrysanthemums rendered in a Western-inspired floral style. The composition brings together the noble, disciplined, and spiritual essence of bamboo with the chrysanthemum—an enduring symbol of longevity and good fortune.
Wearing this pattern evokes a quiet sense of reverence, as if offering oneself in harmony with nature to invite blessings, protection, and enduring prosperity.
