In Japan, the carp or koi, represents good luck, prosperity, and good fortune. Also, the word “koi” is pronounced the same as another word meaning love and affection.The legend of “The Dragon’s Gate on The Yellow River” is well-known in Japan. The story tells of a carp swimming up a waterfall, evolving into a dragon, which ultimately leads to enlightenment. Based on this legend, Japan has the custom of “Koinobori“, or the displaying of “flying” fish banners on Boy’s Day, with the hope that their male child or children become dragons (great men) in the future.Being highly respected and closely tied to Japan’s national identity, the carp signifies perseverance (due to the tendency of fish to swim upstream), and steadfastness, for the overcoming of obstacles with ultimate victory, no matter what the odds.Color is also relevant when it comes to traditional Japanese carp. Blackcarp symbolize loveand the facing of challenges, with redcarp indicating energy and vitality. The most highly-prized is the white carp, with a red dot on its forehead which resembles the Japanese flag.

Jakuchū Ito, (March 2, 1716 to October 27, 1800) was raised in the Nishiki area of Kyoto during the “golden age of art” the Edo era, before Japan opened its doors to the outside world.

Jakuchu was self-taught, and passionate about painting from childhood. A student of Buddhism at the Shokoku-ji zen monastery, he devoted himself to the art of painting, taking inspiration from classic Chinese paintings from the Yuan and Ming dynasties.

With nature as his teacher, he also began making thorough sketches of all natural phenomena; painting flora, fish, birds, and especially fowl, which he used to keep as pets in order to observe them closely, showing their true nature in a signature-style characteristic of Jakuchu.

At Pagong, in celebration of the 300th anniversary of the birth of Jakuchu Ito, we wish to breathe new freshness into this masterpiece with the use of a kimono dyeing technique called Kyo-Yuzen.

Japanese name / 茶屋辻 ( CHAYATSUJI )

In the early Edo period (slightly prior to Yuzen dyeing), this was a kimono worn by the Ooku and Gosanke families of the Tokugawa family from May to September.Use by the general public was prohibited. The kimono is a single-layered summer kimono made of high-quality linen. Initially, it was worn as underwear under costumes, but by the Edo period it had come to be treated as summer outerwear. ”Chaya Tsuji'' uses advanced indigo dyeing techniques said to have been invented by Shirojiro Chaya, and is dyed with landscapes that combine buildings, plants, and running water. Many of the patterns expressed the literary meanings of classical and dynastic literature such as Noh songs and The Tale of Genji, and were patterns that expressed the culture of the upper class. Originally, they were dyed in shades of indigo on a white background, but from the mid-Edo period onward, they began to be embroidered with colored threads and began to use multiple colors.After the Meiji period, Chaya Tsuji was accepted by the general public as a high-class item, and later it became a detailed all-over pattern such as the seaside and cool scenery of the waterside, and even today it is mainly used as a summer pattern on silk products. It is dyed.The classy and cool Chaya Tsuji pattern is a pattern that will keep you cool and content on today's hot and humid day.

This “shell and flower'' pattern was dyed and worn in the late 1880s. At that time, Yuzen dyeing was at its peak due to the introduction of dyes from overseas and the creation of Yuzen dyeing.
In addition, during the Meiji period, a new era of kimono pattern emerged, using a precisely sketched-style of designs by Japanese painters of the era.

Sakura, or cherry blossoms, are Japan’s national flower in the hearts of the people. Every spring, throngs of Japanese people and visitors make efforts to see this well-loved flower, a tradition known as “hanami”, a flower-viewing and picnic event to enjoy the blossoms.

Widely celebrated in Japanese literature, poetry, and art, sakura carry layered meanings. For example, because they bloom briefly, the blossoms are often seen as a metaphor for the ephemeral beauty of living. The brilliant blooming season is powerful, glorious, and intoxicating, but short-lived, a visual reminder that our lives, too, are fleeting.

The joyful tradition of hanami is an old and ongoing tradition, and can be traced back centuries in Japanese culture. The eighth century chronicle Nihon Shoki records hanami festivals being held as early as the third century AD.

The style of this painting is from the Maruyama school of the Edo era (1603-1868).

Peonies were known as the "king of flowers" for their gorgeous appearance and popularity. They were introduced to Japan during the Nara period, and in the Heian period, they were cultivated in the imperial court and temples as ornamental plants. During the Edo period, the cultivation method became widespread, and as they became familiar with the common people, they began to be widely depicted on kosode and other items. Peony is also known as the "flower of wealth and honor" and is loved as a symbol of wealth and honor. The peony pattern, which symbolizes the acquisition of wealth, is filled with hopes and aspirations for prosperity.

Japanese name/ <枝垂れ桜> Shidare-zakura

-About-

This pattern dates back to the Showa era. It depicts the elegant and lustrous form of a weeping cherry tree. The branches are treated like vertical stripes, and the cherry blossoms are stylized, creating a modern weeping cherry tree pattern.
Until the Manyo period, "flowers" meant "plum blossoms," but by the Heian period, cherry blossoms were beloved by aristocrats, and "flowers" came to mean "cherry blossoms." Cherry blossoms have captivated people's hearts from the Heian period to the present day.
In ancient times, trees with drooping branches were believed to house divine spirits. In some regions, weeping cherry trees were not considered appropriate for planting near ordinary private homes and were instead planted within temple grounds.
