Katsushika Hokusai (1760–1849) was not only a great ukiyo-e woodblock printer, he was also one of the greatest painters of the Edo period (1603-1868), before Japan opened its doors to outside artistic influences.

Using a kimono dyeing technique called Kyo-Yuzen, this lively pattern was inspired by Hokusai’s wood-block print, “The Great Wave,“ which is now celebrated the world over.
