Japanese name/ 流水四季草花図 (Ryusuishikisoukazu / Sakai Houitsu)

-About-

Sakai Hōitsu, (August 1, 1761 to January 4, 1829) was born and raised in Edo, modern-day Tokyo.

A master painter, he was also a much-beloved poet of the late Tokugawa period (1603–1867).

This exquisite painting, originally from a folding screen “Flowing Water With Plants and Flowers of the Four Seasons” has flowers which move from spring to summer on the right, and flowers moving from autumn to winter on the left.

The water flowing in the center of the painting is a symbol for the universe, purifying all difficulties.

A collaboration with the TOKYO NATIONAL MUSEUM.

Japanese name/ 源氏車 (Genji guruma)

-About-

The pattern depicted here that represents the flow of water is called Kanze Mizu. It is said to have been given this name because Kanze Dayu, the head of the Kanze school of Noh theater, used it as a formal pattern.

It is also said that during the Edo period, when the Kabuki actor Sojuro Sawamura IV was still calling himself Gennosuke, he wore a Kanze water pattern in the role of "Hadder Shop Yashichi,'' and it became popular.

The elegant water pattern expressed in curved lines is arranged diagonally here, giving it a modern feel.
