-ABOUT-
Who Doesn’t Love Lions?

Shishi lions” are shrine and temple guardians with magical powers to repel evil. They are sometimes called “lion-dogs” or “koma-inu” and were introduced to Japan from China via Korea in the 7th or 8th century AD, during the same period as Buddhism’s transmission to Japan.
Since lions are not indigenous to Japan, China, or Korea, they were to have entered these nation’s cultures in the form of imported art and sculpture, with the earliest traces of the lion as a “protector”, appearing about 208 BC to 221 AD during China’s Han Dynasty.

At Pagong Kyoto, our artisans have implemented the technique of Kyoto-Yuzen, to bring to life the delightful spirit and tradition of the Protector Guardian “Shishi”.

Our company was established in 1941 and founded by Akira Yokota. The company name, "NANGA", originated from the Himalayan mountain "NANGA PARBAT". The mountain stands at 8,126 meters and is the ninth highest mountain in the world. What separates this mountain from others is that it is notoriously difficult to climb. Our philosophy behind "NANGA" is to create a product that can overcome challenges under the most drastic conditions. Throughout our history of over 74 years, we have demonstrated extra care and attention to details to produce quality clothing, sleeping bags, and down jackets.
