Rabbits became a popular motif starting from the Momoyama period. A notable example is the "Hana Usagi Kinran" (Flower Rabbit Brocade), which was favored by the wealthy merchant Suminokura Ryoi. The flower pattern featured in this brocade is dome-shaped, and inside it, there is a rabbit looking back with its front legs slightly raised on a mound of earth known as tsukuri-do. The design surrounding the flower rabbit is called a chrysanthemum arabesque. This motif is regarded as a symbol of longevity, extended life, and the prosperity of descendants.
