"Korin patterns" are the collective term for patterns influenced by the style perfected by the painter Ogata Korin. Korin was an artist born in Kyoto in the mid-Edo period, and his subjects were familiar motifs such as chrysanthemums, plum blossoms, pine trees, and waves. While based on sketches, his refined style boldly simplified the details, creating a unique and innovative pattern that took the world by storm. His innovative style was so popular that it was even published in a book of kosode patterns of the time, and it was all the rage not only during the Edo period but also during the Meiji and Taisho periods.

This Korin chrysanthemum is a simplified design of chrysanthemum flowers, and is also called "Manju chrysanthemum" because its round, plump shape resembles a manju, and "Marju chrysanthemum" in hopes of longevity, and is considered an extremely auspicious design.
