Color / Yellow and Multi-color Care Instruction

Japanese name/ (Tora)

-About-

Celebrated for its extraordinary strength, sharp focus, and keen intelligence, the tiger has long been admired in Japan—especially by the samurai, who adopted it as a powerful emblem. The tiger was believed to ward off evil spirits, protect against misfortune, and safeguard health, making it a symbol of both courage and protection.

In Japanese folklore, the tiger is often portrayed as the rival of the dragon. When shown together, they represent the triumph over great personal trials and the strength required to overcome life’s challenges.

In the natural world, tigers are renowned as the only creatures capable of breaking through dense bamboo forests. For this reason, they are revered as a “king of the forest,” embodying unstoppable force, determination, and authority.

During the Taisho era (1912–1926), tiger motifs became especially popular on boys’ kimono, symbolizing wishes for strength, resilience, and a bold future. The design shown here—one of our most beloved archival patterns—depicts a proud tiger family: watchful parents and their playful cub, set against a rich backdrop of stylized bamboo.

At Pagong, we reimagine this joyful and spirited design for the modern day, so its message lives on. May the fierce tenacity of the tiger and the unyielding resilience of bamboo accompany you, offering strength, protection, and confidence in everyday life.
