Japanese name/ 牡丹 (Botan)

-About-

The peony has long been celebrated in Japan as the “King of Flowers,” admired for its lush petals and magnificent presence. A classic saying compares a beautiful woman to flowers in motion—standing like a peony, sitting gracefully, and walking with elegance—revealing how deeply this flower has been associated with beauty and refinement.

Peonies were introduced to Japan during the Nara period and were first valued for their medicinal qualities. By the Heian period, they were cultivated at the imperial court and temples as ornamental flowers, cherished by aristocrats for their splendor. As cultivation techniques advanced through the Edo period, peonies became beloved by the general public and began appearing widely in kimono and kosode designs.

Peony motifs, especially when paired with flowing arabesque patterns, lions, or butterflies, came to be regarded as highly auspicious. Known also as the “flower of wealth” and the “flower of the emperor,” the peony symbolizes prosperity, honor, and noble spirit.

The peony featured in this design embodies timeless elegance and abundance. Wearing it is believed to invite not only material prosperity, but also a life enriched with beauty, confidence, and inner fulfillment.
