Today marks July 31st, which means the curtain officially falls on Gion Matsuri for another year.

For the entire month of July, Kyoto completely transforms. It isn't just a one- or two-day celebration—from the very first day of the month to the final rituals today, the whole city hums with an unmistakable matsuri energy.

31 Days of Festival Spirit

• The Sound of Summer: The rhythmic chiming of traditional Gion-bayashi music (kon-chiki-chin) echoing through the downtown streets.

• The Atmosphere: Intricate paper lanterns glowing along evening streets during Yoiyama, surrounded by food stalls, summer yukata, and vibrant crowds.
