Gagaku = the image of the dynasty, and this design alone gives off a gorgeous and elegant impression. At that time, the mere idea of ​​a dynasty style was associated with good fortune.
At the beginning of the Showa period, designs of balls, medicine balls, folding fans, and other motifs with elegantly flowing strings were commonly used as patterns for children's kimonos, to the point that a collection of designs was published under the name "Goten moyo."

Originally, this pattern was called the Ouchi Daidairi pattern, which refers to a dynastic style pattern. It is a pattern reminiscent of elegant customs of court life, and has come to be considered an auspicious pattern that represents wealth and elegant harmony.

Hawks are a common design element in boys' baby clothes and are frequently seen in the patterns of Shichigosan kimonos. These ferocious birds possess keen eyesight, enabling them to spot and capture prey from great distances. With their sharp beaks and claws, hawks symbolize bravery and strength, making them favorites among feudal lords.

The use of hawks in kimono patterns dates back to the late Edo period, and they are often combined with other auspicious motifs. One popular design features a hawk alongside a folding screen. A folding screen is a piece of indoor furniture used as a partition, and the combination of hawks and folding screens is a common visual motif.

The hawk pattern represents the bravery of a military commander and signifies the ability to perceive opportunities and seize them. Additionally, since falconry symbolizes authority and military might, this pattern also conveys a wish for a child's future success and achievements.

Japanese name/ 道長取に辻が花

-About-

“Tsuji ga hana” is a type of traditional patterning , known to be the oldest dyeing method from the Nara-era (710-794), and its beauty is described in detail in 15th century Japanese literature.

The dye process consists of making tiny stitches which are pulled within a pattern and then dyed in sections.

In the form of luxurious kimono, tsuji ga hana was often dyed purple, red, or deep indigo, and further embellished with the addition of real gold leaf and embroidery. It is not clearly known who invented it or why it was called tsujigahana, which literally translates to “flowers at the crossroads”.

At Pagong Kyoto, our artisans have implemented the technique of Kyoto-Yuzen for carrying on the tradition and spirit of tsuji ga hana.

-About-

This dynamic design of whirls with standing waves “caught in a moment”, has long been used on traditional kimono, as well as other hand-crafted items. Each artisan’s rendition being slightly different, such as the addition of flying cranes or geometric shapes; elements added for interest to the original pattern.
Pagong’s design is comprised of repeated concentric circles, or maru, which represent a “current” signifying harmony. The motif’s resemblance to a “target” is symbolic of persistence, and the achieving of one’s personal goal. The seigaiha or “standing wave” is a pattern which represents surges of good fortune, power, and resilience.

The inspiration for this lively pattern came from a Kabuki theatre costume from the Edo era (1603-1868) in the collection of the Tokyo National Museum.

It is said that the long beard of the Japanese Spiny Ebi symbol since ancient times, and is also a symbol for success and longevity due to the way in which lobsters are able to swim with vigor.

The sprout of a young pine tree is drawn next to the lobster, a symbol to portray a fresh beginning, giving us strength and courage at each important turning point in life.

Shrimp motif patterns are traditional Japanese designs that are considered particularly auspicious.
