The pink carnation is a beloved flower, considered one of the Seven Autumn Flowers. One theory about the origin of the name nadeshiko is that its delicate beauty inspires the desire to gently stroke it, leading to the name “nadesasuri-gusa” (stroking grass), which later evolved into “nadeshiko.”
Because it blooms over a long period from spring to summer, it is also known as tokonatsu (“eternal summer”).

Since ancient times, the pink carnation has been cherished for its soft white and pale pink blossoms. Varieties introduced from the Asian continent were distinguished from the native Japanese type, which came to be known as Yamato-nadeshiko (Japanese carnation).

In The Pillow Book, it is written: “Among the flowers of the grasses, the carnation is beautiful; the imported variety is especially lovely, yet the Japanese one is also very beautiful,” suggesting that both were admired in the imperial court. The introduced variety, also known as sekichiku, tends to have slightly rounder petals and more vivid colors, giving it a charming and lively impression. In contrast, the Yamato-nadeshiko is appreciated for its modest and refined elegance. This particular pattern appears closer to the more vibrant style, reflecting the sense of beauty described in The Pillow Book.

Originally used to distinguish it from imported varieties, the term Yamato-nadeshiko has come to represent the idealized image of Japanese femininity—graceful, pure, and refined. Today, it is also associated with strength and vitality, as seen in the nickname of Japan’s women’s national soccer team, Japan women's national football team.

Classic Japanese design will often reflect an artisan’s delicate sensibility, and their deeply felt connection to nature. This exquisitely rendered pattern of a boat with crane is no exception, which celebrates all which is good in life, and a fresh beginning.

In ancient Japanese mythology, the tsuru or crane, comes from Mount Horai in heaven, and carries divine happiness and good fortune to earth. According to myth, it can also live 1,000 years, therefore the tsuru is widely revered as a symbol for strength, and long life.

The boat depicted in this pattern is symbolically being rowed into the ocean of the heavens, which signifies a future destined to be blessed, and filled with much happiness.

The boat and crane when represented together, are symbols of protection, which is why they are often seen embellishing elegant wedding kimono.

Also presented are specific plant-life chosen for their special meanings such as matsu, ume, and kiku.

Matsu, or pine, can live in reality over 1,000 years, therefore represent longevity, and resilience. Ume, or plumblossoms, have the ability to bloom during harsh, cold winters, therefore they are symbolizing vitality and life-force. Kiku, or chrysanthemums, are also representative of longevity, as well as rejuvenation and nobility, since the chrysanthemum is a symbol for the emperor and appears on the Japanese imperial seal.

Gagaku = the image of the dynasty, and this design alone gives off a gorgeous and elegant impression. At that time, the mere idea of ​​a dynasty style was associated with good fortune.
At the beginning of the Showa period, designs of balls, medicine balls, folding fans, and other motifs with elegantly flowing strings were commonly used as patterns for children's kimonos, to the point that a collection of designs was published under the name "Goten moyo."
